A: 
There are three basic ways. The answer depends upon what kind of oars and oarlocks you have..

One is to have the oar wrapped with a collar or sleeve that positions the oar in the open horns or ring of the oarlock..

The second would be to have the oars pinned in place.

The third would be to have the oars secured in a clamp.

The first method being the oldest and also the only one of the three that allows the oars to be feathered on the backstroke.
