It would be ok as long as there was no EMI (power lines) close and you did not get in wet. I have searched a beach at a lake up here and have found a bunch of coins. Did not go near or in the water.

Does it work underwater

Details: 
i own a beach house and i was wondering if i could use it in the lake. I would also like to make sure i can use it in sand.

Per manufacturer - This unit will detect anything with metallic properties in it. Anything from tin foil to gold to rusty nails. A coin-sized metal object will trigger the detector up to 5''-6'' down.
