The Gator® Flex 360 Mount is built from proprietary XK360 die-cast lightweight aluminum, and its strength-to-weight ratio optimizes boat performance and its unique isolator feature protects the motor in shallow water and heavy cover situations. A: 
On a 24 volt system when using 2 - 12 volt batteries. Connect the positive post of the first battery to the negative post of the second battery. Connect the positive post of the second battery to the positive side of the motor. Connect the negative post of the first battery to the ground of the motor or controller. When disconnecting always remove the ground first and when connecting always connect the ground last.

It appears the shaft length is the actual total length of the shaft. However, some of the shaft extends into the mechanism on top the shaft, and some of the shaft extends into the motor at the bottom, so the actual exposed shaft length is a couple of inches or so less than the listed length.
