A:
according to "The deer Dr." from field & stream.... A short bleat is the estrus call from a doe. If you let the bleat go long for the full drop of the can it actually is an alarm bleat to other deer.
Hence... driving them away. Not sure if this is true... but the method of a quick short bleat , about half the drop of the can.. worked for me, actually turning the buck around as it walked away ,and brought him right back to me.

It never has worked for me and I have tried it at all stages of the rut and all times of day. I have bleated often and only once an hour. I have used it when I have not seen deer and when I have seen deer. Good luck.

It depends on the time of season and where you are hunting. I bleat once or twice if no buck is in sight, but if he is then bleat once and see if that gets his attention. If not might as well try it again and then wait a few seconds and see how he responds.

i would use this when a buck is within 100 yards because thats about how far the sound will carry. it varies though depending on the weather. i primarily like using the call in late rut because the bucks seem to not come to any other call.
