It is technically not a bug protection cap but it does have the mesh netting for the face. There isn't any mesh netting on the back of theneck.

I sprayed the hat with Max Deet spray and didn't have any bugs after me.

I think it would keep bugs out. The mesh attaches in the back via velcro for a snug fit. You could always put another hood over the back of your head if they were still getting through. The front definitely will keep bugs out.
