The photo I'm looking at on your web site shows the red flag and the Or18 type line holder but the describtion does not say anything about the red flag tattle tail system that comes with some side planer boards from Offshore.

I want the Starboard side planer board with the red flags tattle tail system that's adjustble with a spring set in several different hole locations and that has the two clips with the one that works with the fireline brand of fishing line. The newer quick release that works with slippery lines of smaller line diameters.

Run the bait to the side of the boat. They can also be used bank fishing along moving water. You can hook it to your line let place it in the water and the current will pull you bait all the way cross the stream if you let it.

To attach the board to the line, simply squeeze the releases on the board and slip the line in between the two pads. Tips online through Off Shore: http://www.offshoretackle.com/quest....

My dipsy divers will not plane out to the side so i was wondering if i could use one of these. I troll at 1.5 mph which i think is too slow for the dipsy to plane out.

Yes. Off-shores will pull your dipsy's to the side. Keepin mind though, the more weight you have pulling on the back of that board and the faster you go, you boards are not going to act properly. I have ran mini umbrella rigs that have 5 1/4 oz. dollflies, metalwire frame and a 1 oz. weight off of the off shore boards. They just won't plane out as far with a lot of weight and high speeds. 1.5 will be a good speed with minimal weight on the board to run it as far off your boat as you like.

My guess would be no since the divers would pull the planer down under the water. But just a guess. YOu can get dipsy divers with a rotation knob that makes them flair out to either side.

Other items needed?

Details:
I am wanting to learn to use planer boards but have never been around them. Do you need anything else to make them work or is the planer board a stand alone...just hook it to your line and let it out operation. I see planer board reels and line available, do I need these also?
Thank You for your help

A:
The Off Shore Side Planer connects directly to the line on your fishing rod. To use the OR-12, a Trolling rod works best. There is good info for using side planers available online. You only need planer reels and a mast when you are using the large skis.

Rigging for Stripers

Details:
I am going to be trolling for stripers on Lake Cumberland (KY). I do not have access to live bait, what would you suggest for rigging to be used along with the offshore planer board. Please be fairly detailed, I am new to trolling and crank baits. I grew up using live bait only. How long of a leader? What type of crank bait/diver etc. would you use? Include a link to an example if you can. Thank you in advance.

They work well for walleye in Erie. Strippers should be an advantage.

I am certainly no expert, but I would recommend a leader no longer than your rod. I use one about 4-5' long and prefer 20 lb fluorocarbon. I use nothing other than 2/0 Gamakatsu octopus or octopus circle hooks. I run three boards off of each side (Offshore) and usually 2 back lines with release floats (that you can pick up at the Bass Pro in Jamestown or the one on US 90) and at least 1 down line. I Carolina rig all of my rods using egg sinkers and Offshore Tackle crane swivels. I vary my speed and my depth until I find something that works. Why don't you have access to live bait? Shiners that you can purchase at the bait houses work, just not as well as the Alewives. I also pull a lot of umbrella rigs. I use 30-40 lb big game line on 9' dipsy diver rods with fairly large line counters (25's and 30's). I use the Cumberland Pro spinner jigs exclusively. I recommend going to their site and checking them out. You can also get set up for downrigging, but I don't use this much except in the fall when the stripers get below 40'. Otherwise, it is bait on boards or umbrella rigs in terms of trolling. Casting the banks at night in winter and spring is also productive, but it is not trolling. Some people troll minnow baits and shad baits (Gizz 4's) on leadcore and snap weights and even without any weight when they are shallow in the spring back in the creeks, but I have not done well with that. I also recommend hiring a guide for at least one trip. It is money well spent. Tell the guy in advance that you want a learning trip or you could be back at the dock in an hour with a limit.
