We used it to warm up some dish water, as we have no running water at our deer camp. Removed the coffee holder, stem, etc. and worked great. I would imagine it would work great for tea if you used the tea bags or a coffee filter.

Yes. The stainless steel perk basket can be removed to make hot water only for tea.
