I see people using these very effectively but ive had very little luck with them. Do you guys cast and reel in like a spinner bait? How fast? When you use the lighter 501 and 502s do you weight them down with split shot? I find that the lighter lures tend to stay near the top unless i bring them in slowly. Any tips would be great.

I use a slow retrieve with a momentary pause to let the lure fall free and then reel in slowly. Trout will usually bang into them.

I use a 503 gold with my ultralite ugly stick and reel in at a steady pace with my old quick fire shamano open faced reel. I do try different speeds depending on the water temperature and the depth the fish seem to like.A:
I have the same problem with getting this lure down to the bottom where the rainbows are. I've had much better success casting this out, letting it sink once it hits the water for 5-8 seconds (depending on depth where you're fishing as it can get snagged), and then reeling in very slowing (much like a spinner). I've had several strikes while waiting for it to sink, and have had a fish on the line when I set my bail.

When I fish these light, I usually try to"free line" it. then I usually end up using a split shot a foot above the lure. When they weigh more, I try to fish them slow, or fast, depending on the variables. Work on speed, try fishing fast and see if you catch them. If not, try slow. Pretty soon you'll get one. Also, mess around with colors. My favs are trout patterns (brown and rainbow trout). Good luck

When rigging for a spinning/casting setup, do you tie your line directly to the snap? What knot do you use?

I fish using a lot of spinners. I just bought some super dupers to try out, and am a little confused about the snap.I'm wondering if I should just tie a trilene knot directly to the snap, use some sort of loop knot, or just remove the snap and tie a knot directly to the lure...

I tie everything directly to the line. The more you add, the more things can fail you.A:
I do use a snap swivel and have also used a steel leader with a snap swivel and have caught trout with no problems. I have used the 503 gold and silver both seem to be very effect.

I always tie directly to the lure, with a palomar knot.A:
You only use a swivel with inline spinners like Mepps or Panther Martin.Use the snap...never use a swivel on a spoon or any wobble baits it will kill the action of the lure just like tying directly to the bait will also kill the action. A trilene knot is fine. I use a palomar knot on everything from tuna to trout. The knot won't affect the out come but using the provided snap is a must.Answers

I have had no problems catching trout using a snap swivel tied with a regular fisherman's knot. I have even used a silver steel leader with a snap swivel and still caught rainbow trout with it. I have had very good luck with both the 503 silver and gold super duper.A:
haven't had any issues with the swivel, and have fished it both ways. The swivel also helps the action, IMO, and should be left on.One thing that HAS DECREASED strikes, however, is a larger size line. I usually fish 4-6lb test. Have had buddies fishing the same lure in the same spots right next to and had nothing when using bigger lines...

No. You can buy different types made from different materials. Brass color with a nickle blade could be a problem. Try using a stainless ball bearing type swivel. bright + bright= shad.....and it's getting away ; )A:

I watched this lure in the water closely as i brought it back in and it seemed the swivel was virtually invisible. Due to the action of the lure the swivel seemed to be unnoticed. Not sure if you are fly fishing or rod and reel but i use all rod and reel and light line, clear or any type that disappears under water in case the fish are spooked for one reason or another. The nearby lake we fish is extremely clear and have had no trouble so far with this lure Try them and i'm sure with the right color for your area you will be very satisfied.
