Rapala's Original Floating Minnow is the lure that started it all and is still one of the most popular lures around. Whether twitched on the top as a surface bait, retrieved as a shallow runner, weighted with a split-shot for medium depths or bottom walked off a sinker rig, the Original Floating Minnow's wounded minnow action continues to be irresistible to game fish.

I would think that it would work well for trout. Our favorite colors are the silver and gold Original Rapala in sizes F-05, F-07, F-09. Not many trout in Iowa - we use them for crappies, and all types of bass.
the rapala floating minnow in #3,#5, is a great lure for trout in running water.cast cross current & let it drift downstream until its at about 10 o" clock then tighten up on the bail and let it drag across the current! the trout will come up and slay it!
I can't say I have fished in the states but over here in Australia they work well in Trout streams and lakes. While I have used many colors the most consistent ones are 5cm floating Brown Trout in clear water and a 5cm floating Firetiger in discolored or dirty water.
Hey Micks try small 5-7cm floating originals in silver, gold, blue/silver,rainbow and brown trout patterns.cast upstream and let swim through pools and eddies,at the end of the swing allow lure to sit in one place and give it some extra action with your rod.if your fishing for bigger trout try 9-13cm originals.
This lure will work for trout when they are in shallow water in the spring or if they are feeding on top. When the water is warm the large trout will be deep this lure will only dive a couple of feet. I would try a small in-line spinner.
i want a place that i can fish from the bank. When should i fish there? and what should i use? (the place can be anywhere; creek, pond, lake, or river)
and secondarily, whats a good place to fish for crappie and/or catfish
Good place for big catfish are on the james dont know about crappie. Use live bait for cafish a slider sinker with leader. size 5 circle hook. Fish late afternoon or in the morning
I fished from the banks of Tenessee river and the streams that run off the tenessee river. Just look for a spot with slow moving water and some shrubs in the water. I've had best of luck in those particular areas.
I use a 6'6" spinning rod medium action which has a lot of flex. I've always used Berkely Smoothcast 8lb test with this set up, and I'm happy with the distance. I attach it with a black colored swivel...oh, I've caught plenty of fish like this too, if that helps :)
a trick i use for farther casts is putting a float high up on my line. it wont work when youre fishing deep depths though. you can atach a swivel to your line for a little extra weight.
FAQ....i get these alot well first f05 is light so to cast abetter distance you must get a light spinning combo i recommend superlight browningcombowith 4 to 6 lb. line and you should be casting so well youll be surprised at yourself
cast it on light line & spinning gear - I wouldn't go over 8# test with that small of a lure. If you HAVE to use it on heavier line, just put a splitshot or 2 on your line about a foot ahead of the lure.
wow great question. I am from northern canada and have caught a lot of big lakers. so for jigging you should try a big tora tube with a trailor(we used these for years before those tiger tubes came out, slide in a 6-8 inch piece of sucker o,tulibee9Herring) or whitefish inside the tube.allow to settle on bottom, small jigs or lay it on the bottom will entice mammoth size lakers.white or Chartruese colors work well. For trolling try big Husky devels, large Len thompson spoons, big williams whitefish spoons or big flatfish.
Realy big trout wont chase trolled spoons or plugs but up to 30-40 pounders will. For realy big monster lakers you need to jig them
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_20741____SearchResults use a downrigger and a fish finder or if you have no downrigger use leadcore line.
great question. you want to maintain as much as the action as it has right out of the package.try bigger and bigger hooks until they tangle, throw the bait off or sink the lure. On most of my hard baits I replace the standard hooks with bigger, higher quality hooks.
I upsize the hooks on the F7's and F9 to size 6. The F11 can most likely handle #4's but it's no big deal to swap them out again if you don't like how it fishes with them.
The F11 hooks do seem a bit undersized, but that hasn't been a problem for me. The hooks have incredible strength, and I haven't lost one yet on a walleye, pickerel, or pike. My advice is to stick with the original hooks.
I notice that I tend to catch most of my fish on the front hook, so if I were to replace a hook, it would be that one. I would be worried about the overall lure balance, though.
Make certain when you tie this lure on that you have a loop (1" or so) in the line. You may want to search the web for the Rapala knot. Slightly difficult to tie, but when you get it right, the lure swims perfectly. If you tie your line directly to the lure with no loop, it won't have the action you need.
Once tied properly, cast and reel...don't need a fancy retrieve.
use the small one. GET IT IN PERCH COLOR. Find a boat dock with bass and sunnies. Cast out. Reel in with sharp jerks and pauses. Catches them every time. Hope this can help.
just toss it out near any type of weeds or rocks, let it sit still for a moment, then give it a twitch or two... wait, then repeat this over and over, or try alternating between random twitching and just reeling it back in. Fish WILL eat this! (see picture)
love this question will catch them and smart buying smaller size use it by firstcasting out on light line 4lb.on light combo rod and reel...when it hits surface let it sit cuz you may get a strike than jerk it with the rod to provoke an attack..than stop and begun twitching 3 or so times than stop and continue tillretrieve use this inrivers and small ponds good luck hope i helped
Cast out next to some shrubs in the water twitch your lure 2x reel in about 4-5 inches of line give it 2 more twitches. Repeat 3x maximum. Then just reel in at a quick constant pace you may get a reaction strike.
Rapalas are easy to use - the floaters only run 1-4 feet under the surface, so don't try to use them in deep water (over 10 feet). All you need to do is reel them back at a slow to medium pace and give them a small extra jerk now and then during the retrieve to make the swimming more erratic.
when you cast it out, let it sit there without moving it until the ripples are gone. then twich it then let it float back to the top and just do it repidiatly.
Personally, I've caught largemouth bass anywhere between 6" to 20" on the F7's and F9's. Black/silver has always worked great for me. The Rainbow Trout color of this size works for me too, although I dont see it listed anymore?
I have caught a Chain Pickerel on a floating jerk bait. It wasn't a Rapala but I wouldn't see why a rapala wouldn't work. I used a bright orange color when I hooked up.
Yes. Get the medium size . Perch color...they love it...and reel in with sharp jerks and somewhat long pauses. they crush it ... cast by boat docks and submerged boulders
i would recomend this lure for pickerel any day ive caught tons of pickel on this lure ive caught the on the one that is i thinl 3an a half inches long silver works great for pickerel
Absolutely! For Chain Pickerel and Northern Pike, I prefer to use the F-7 size.
In my opinion, the F-9 and larger do not have enough action for these apex predators. If you'd like to use a larger lure, I love using a Jointed floater (J-9, J-11), but for Non-Jointed Floating Rapalas, I prefer F-7 in either a yellow perch for clear water, or the brighter colors, especially in stained water.
I have caught large pickerel and pike on a little Rapala F-7 (see picture below for a yellow perch Rapala F-7 and a 28" Pike)
You may be looking for a Prop, Skitter Prop, Torpedo, or other blade baits. Rapala and Heddon make great top water baits. Maybe it's one of those. If not, maybe a buzzbait or chatterbait. I'm not quite sure where to direct you because there are many top water blade baits.
