The Shad Rap RS is a plastic version of Rapala’s legendary, balsa Shad Rap. The durable Shad Rap RS rattles hard, suspends and produces a different wobble from its wooden brother. Because it's heavier, the RS is easier to cast. It's a deadly lure when casting or trolling for bass, walleye, salmon, trout, pike or other freshwater game fish. Running depth: 5'-15'.

what color would be best?

Details:
I live in northern Indiana and mostly fish a clear lake with plenty of drop-offs, and a big flat. It is stocked with muskie, walleye, pike, and smallies. is there any all-around good color for these fish. any other advice would be helpful. thank you

A:
I've used these baits for years on Lake Ontario and the NY Finger Lakes - all clear to ultra clear (can see more than 15ft). My long time fave has been the Chrome/Blue and Chrome/Black, but lately the Shad and Perch have been better producers.

If I could buy only one, I'd buy the shad. Works great trolling and casting.

I'd use a lure with a dark colored back and a crome belly. Seems to work for me in very clear water.

In clear water generally the lighter colors such as silver or white are generally best...best to try to match the color of the bait to typical baitfish for the area...also try to match general shape of the bait to that of typical baitfish for the area.

You need to match the lure to the baitfish in your lake. Unsure? If you keep your fish, cut open the stomach of one you're cleaning and check out the contents.

A:
bigfishken said it right, they are both solid lures, but which one works for you depends on where you fish and how you fish and what you are fishing for.

As a mostly smallmouth fisherman, I prefer the RS series. The 'suspend' is the best piece for me. Think crankbait that you can turn into a jerk bait at will. If you try this with any other crank bait, it rises on the pause - real bait fish don't rise when they stop swimming. I've found that the jerk after the pause is when the fish hit.

Both are excellent baits...the bass will have to answer this question and their preference can change on a day to day or even hour by hour basis.

I like the extra weight of the RS and GSR models because the lake I fish is often windy. I personally think the RS models have more realistic finishes as well, and I use the 2 3/4" model in both silver and shad color often

It depends where you fish. I use it all over the place. I lived in SC for long time and now in Vegas. I have used lots of different colors in the shad rap. The silver or shad pattern is great but out here the #7 crawdad color is the best. I dont like the blue/silver color.

in my personal opinion this is better, the casting distance is greater and the rattles are louder, but you should try them both, see what works better for the body of water you fish, good luck!
