I use those rods a lot in salt water. They're very good rods for the $$, but if you'll be doing a lot of casting I recommend the one piece rod.It depends on what you mean by "inexpensive". For a real good quality, nice looking reel for that rod that will last a long time, resist corrosion well, cast well with mono or braid, that has a good drag & cost less than $100.00 I recommend a Penn Sargus 5000 or 6000. Any reel cheaper than $80-$100 you won't be happy with for very long, it'll give you problems.
My favorite line for the past 10 yrs is Power Pro braided line, but be careful, it can cut you bad it you try to hold it tight & it slides through your hand.

I would definitely choose an ugly stick, but would look for something in the 9+foot range for the shore unless you are just fishing for schoolies great value for the moneyA:
I use this rod for live lining for Rockfish (Striped Bass) in the Cheasapeake Bay. It used from the boat and from shore. I love this rod

with the 8' lengh, you can get by with the 4/0 size. I also use a Newell 229 on it as well because it is so light weight, you can stick a small reel on it.

I fish both pier and inshore and I like the 8' lenght the best. I have some super light weight BPS rods that are 6'6" that do a good job to buy my favorite is the 8' length.

if you mean freshwater or saltwater either way you seem like you want an ugly stikgood choice I have much respect for these rods and their reels
get a 6 foot 6 it is a comfortable and multipurpose length than get a
medium M-for freshwater
or MH medium-heavy for saltwater
depending on which yuoll be fishing more
get the ugl stik regular spinning rod or ugly stik lite spinning rod
the reel I highly highly recommened the pflueger gx-7 reel for freshwater get the right size reel
and it comes with an extra spool
or for saltwater just get an ugly stik combo

I would strongly recomend the ugly stick. I use medium action. at the lake i fish at they have a large variety of fish and i use the ugly stick for all of the types of fishing i do. i dont exactly know the length but i think anything will do.

I like BWS1102 which is 7' and handles 1oz to 6oz lures and big live baits. It also handles the huge fish that hit lures and baits that big. You would love the Ugly Stik big water rod for in shore fishing, and 7' is a good length to start with.Answers

My favorite lightweight rod for most stuff is the Offshore Angler™ Offshore Extreme™ Freestyle Jigging Spinning Rod teamed with a Penn Slammer Live Liner feature. This is in my book the perfect combo. The live liner feature works great for bottom fishing because you can bunge you rod down and flip on the live liner feature and walk away from it and not worry.A:

I would go with a 7' MH action for redfish under 15 pounds and trout. If you are going for bull reds (over 20 pounds) the BWS1102 is a 7' heavy action rod that handles 1oz to 6oz lures with the back bone to handle huge reds, huge bass, & monster catfish. You can use it in salt & fresh water.Details:

ok if you want a 6'6" 2 piece I would recommned the ugly stik lite it feels more sensitive and i like it its much more comfotableI use it for bass and It has gotten me some nice 13+ inchers on the last time I used it
I had it matched with some pinnacle reel

It all depends on what type of fishing you are doing. For lures, small baits, and from a boat the Lite is good, but for bigger baits or from shore the regular is probably best. Hope this helps
