They can be, it might take some time to get it mounted right though. I have some on a receiver hitch on the front of my Jeep for when I go to the OBX.

These are short for easier boat install. I wojld not use this on my vehicle. I would want longer holders for surf rods with longer grip ends.
For a boat they are perfect.
