my truck (sport trac) has a hole for a trailer hitch, but no receiver tube, can this be modified in some way to work with this configuration?

A: 
The tubing slides into the receiver tube then a pin secures it. I don't think trying to secure it to a hole for a hitch ball would hold the weight because of how far it extends from the truck.

It’s difficult to say exactly how much weight the carrier will hold because of the fact that it’s a fulcrum from the front of the truck to the back. It will hold generally between 500 and 750 lbs. of distributed weight capacity. That is, the cargo needs to be distributed equally and secured between the cab-rack and the carrier so all of the weight is not resting on the carrier. from Uriah

This would be great but how do you secure the load on the roof when used in the upright position? Is there a compatible bar to secure the load on the roof for those of us with no roof rack? I have seen one with similar products but nothing is suggested here. Maybe it should be...

A: 
You could use a type of rack made from manufactures like Yakima or Thule. There are different attachments you can buy to carry kayaks, snowboards, skis, storage bins, etc, that attach to their bars. I'm sure you could find something that would work for whatever you plan to haul.
