A:
It requires 8 D size batteries that can be rechargeable. In each of the 4 sections is a NiMH rechargeable battery that gets its charge from the D batteries.

A review on the Coleman website states:
Take note the lantern as a unit runs on "D" batteries, but the removeable lights once removed run on rechargeable "AAA" batteries which are included. These batteries charge off of the "D" batteries. Takes 8 D batteries.

Is the 72 hr. approx. time of usage with all four banks on. If so then will the usage of only one or two banks extend the estimated time of use? And can each of the banks be turned on and off independently while attached to the home power source?

Only if you remove other units that you prefer not to be turned on. I have not left the entire unit on for an extened period of time so I'm unable to answer the usage question.

I have never tried leaving it on for 72 hours. However; I have owned this lantern for over a year with regular use, and I am still on the original set of batteries. 72 hours seems reasonable to me for all 4 banks. It seems logical that less banks would extend run time further. Banks cannot be turned on/off individually when attached to base unit. If you want less than all four panels to light, just remove the unwanted panels and the remaining ones will light via the base on/off button.
