Stacey King, 12-Time Bassmaster Classic Qualifier

With the Bass Pro Shops Extreme Baitcast Reels, you get all the tournament ready technology the big guys depend on, plus the confidence in knowing that your reel is perfectly matched to the kind of fishing you're into. With six separate performance versions plus three left-hand models, the Extreme Baitcast Reel series easily covers the widest range of techniques and presentations. The Free Zone Braking System helps you make that perfect cast, regardless of the lure size or wind conditions! Power comes easy with the six-disc Teflon® glass/stainless drag system that cranks out up to 10 lbs. of bass-busting drag pressure. All the power is handled with a smooth 7-bearing system, featuring double shielded stainless steel ball bearings and one Powerlock instant anti-reverse bearing. Every Extreme Baitcast Reel is built on a strong and durable 1-piece aluminum frame with a free-floating machined-aluminum spool and titanium-coated line guide. It's finished off with our Recurve Handle and click star drag that moves the reel's center of gravity inward for a sleek, balanced feel when reeling in your limit. The 6 versions of our Extreme Baitcast Reel Series includes: Super High Speed 7.1:1 (Models ETX10SHC and EXT10SHLC), High Speed 6.4:1 (Models ETX10HE and ETX10HLE) and Standard 5.4:1 (Models ETX10SE and ETX10SLE) retrieve, all available in both right-and left-handed models; Flipping (Model ETX10HFC) includes flipping switch, 6.4:1 retrieve is ideal for flipping and pitching for bass and bottom bouncing for walleye; Wide Spool (Model ETX20HC) has increased line capacity, 6.4:1 retrieve and is great for heavy line and larger baits; and Lite (Model ETX05HC) has a smaller frame, 6.3:1 and is ideal for smaller baits and finesse situations.

Tough to answer without knowing what lures you want to throw. I like a slower reel for deep crankbaits, around 5.0 give or take. For blade baits I use a 6.2 to 6.4 primarily but occasionally a 7.1. For Carolina rigs, spoons, and bottom jigs I usually use a 7.1. If you are throwing Texas rigged soft plastics on this rod I'd suggest a fast reel for this, too, although a medium works if you're trying to use the same rig for many lures.

The faster gear ratio supplies less power to pull the fish to the boat. Depends on the application you are using.

I use the 7.1 when fluke fishing with a MH rod. I would use a slower model if I were fishing a spinner bait or anytime I am fishing really heavy cover.

I don't know but I'll take a wild guess that the HFC has a flipping switch on it. Do you know what that is? When flipping, it is sometimes desirable to be able to lock the spool as soon as the bait hits the water in heavy cover (when flipping) since you often get a strike right away. So instead of having to manipulate your hands and turn the handle to lock the spool/engage the drag, there is a button you can depress that accomplishes the same thing. Not sure if that's what is going on with this reel, but it might be. Sorry if I'm explaining something you already know on the flipping switch thing. Hope this helps.

If i'm understanding correctly, I'd say you're missing a washer or misplaced a part that heightens your drag star.

Take a close look at the handle(crank). One end of the handle may be bent toward the reel body more than the opposite end. Carefully bend the handle out until the drag star clears.

you can pretty much go by your rod rateing as far as the line poundage. i've had 10lb on here and had 50lb braid. although i broke a rod with the 50lb braid, the reel held up great..lol

It really depends on what you plan to use it for, but I can tell you for me I have at times had both 12# mono and 15# P-Line CX spooled up and it handles both of those just fine.

Suffix 832 20lb test (same diameter as 6lb Mono). Universal, strong and much better than Power Pro since it has better water resistance, i.e. Power Pro can cause backlashes once the wax-finish has worn off. Suffix has an additional layer of fiber.

No this reel does not have a bait clicker on it . I recommend looking into Abu Garcia Ambassadeurs like the C4 or C3 ,( in a 5500, 6500 or 6600 size ) or a Shimano Cardiff ( in the 300 or 400 models ) if your looking for quality at an affordable price . If price is not an issue go with a Shimano Calcutta B ( in the 400 or 700 size ) or a Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Record ( in a 5500 or 6500 size ) . All these reels are great catfishing reels yet the more expensive reels will cast lighter weights into the wind much better and will be much easier to learn to use and last longer in theory anyway . The Shimano Calcutta even comes in an even more expensive model , the Calcutta TE . If you plan on chasing huge cats ( trophy cats 50 # plus pigs ) and plan on spending a lot of time on the water chasing them down then you will be happiest with the Calcutta's or even larger Ambassadeurs like a 7000c3 or a Ambassadeur 9000 Big Game which is my latest buy and I'm totally Impressed with it for hunting down the big fattys , but the big game reels don't have any breaking system on them so it is not really a good real for a beginner . Go round reel for sure and not a low profile and you will be much happier . Anyway thats my two cents worth concerning the reels . Oh yea I would like to suggest you try out Danny Kings punch bait (original flavor)and the Team Catfish Secret 7 dip bait . Use size 6 trebles with the punch bait and size 6 trebles or 3/0 circle hook with a tube lure for the dip bait like this item 38-449-030-09 ,catfish charlie dipbait worms . I prefer the smooth tubes with holes over this kind with the ribs but I didn't find them here on line . Tie the hook or tube and hook combo to a 8 in leader tied to a swivel . I push the hooks down into the bait with a steel ruler from an old combination square that I put a handle on it by wrapping masking tape around and around the top 5 inches or so . Above the swivel use an sinker (1oz-8oz depending on the current ) and a glass or plastic bead between the sinker and the swivel to cushion the knot from the sinker . I use 30# pound main line with a 20# flourocarbon leader so if I get hung up the leader will break and I don't loose my sinker and line . I promise you that these two baits will call em from a long ways off . If you are in the right place you will catch a ton of fish . Most of the time you can only use one rod at a time because the action is to fast for more than one .They both are really going to catch you mainly fish in the 1# - 15# size but It will ocassionally call in bigger cats .You can order both baits online direct from each of the companys . I'm not sure why BassPro doesn't offer them online . They are both available in most bait shops too . One last tip take a bar of soap with you and when you get home rub plain vineager on your hands vigarously after washing them and it will kill the smell . I would like to tell you that many times when every one else is striking out using live or cut bait we will be absolutely slaying them . I do recommend live suckers or hearing or shad about 10- 15 inches long for the huge catfish . If they swim within 20 ft. it will not be able turn down the suckers . You can usually buy them in some of the bait shops . Ok I believe I can get off my soap box now . I just wanted to share this with you so you can enjoy catfishing as much as we do . Hope that helps you out in some way .Good luck and tight lines .

Have you oiled/cleaned your levelwind? It sounds like you probably have some kind of debris or build-up that is interfering with the travel of the guide.

Time to get it serviced. the Pin on the line guide could be wore out and dirt plays a big roll in this as well. clean the reel and oil and grease it back up should go right back to working again. if not send it to the guys at BPS and they will make your reel come back to life.

My real has the same problem and after tearing into it it is the small piece that rides in the grooves on the line control bar. Very easy to get to...push bass pro button on left side of real and rotate side plate till it comes off. You will see a small Philips screw that holds onto the front green plate, remove. pull spool remove another small screw on other side of spool, remove handle and two external screws holding other side plate on and oil port and screw. when the other side plate comes off you will see the second screw holding on the face plate in front. pop off face plate unscrew cap with a slotted screw driver and out pops the offending part. It is a small chrome piece with the tip that rides in the grooves broken off. happens a lot on these reels and i have yet to find the right part but am looking now as I have two of these reels with the same problem. will post when I find the part. Another poster mentioned a "paw" so maybe that is what it is called.
