It depends on the gear ratio. But typically it does not really matter what you rig your reel with as long as it carries enough line for the application and has enough power to reel in the fish you will be catching. I would not recommend this reel for anything lighter than 1/4 ounce in weight. For those lighter applications use a spinning reel. I typically use a slow retrieve bait caster for crank baits and a quicker one for jigging. Everything else fall in between.

what my husband wants to know is are they good for bass fishing and how should he do them so they will wrok for bass fishing if that is what they are for.

They do work for bass. Especially smallmouth. You can rig with a jig head or plain hook and split shot.

I use them for smallmouth on a shakeyhead jig. Bouncing them around weed beds seems to do the trick.
