Freeze your 1 lb propane cans overnight and sit your large tank in the sun for most of the day to get as warm as possible. Attach your refill valve to large tank and turn upside down. Screw on 1 lb tank and open valve on large tank. You will hear the liquid propane entering the 1 lb tank for about 1 minute. I usually leave open for a few seconds more to be sure. Close valve on large tank and remove 1 lb tank. Ususlly if done right you will get 75-90 % full which makes it worthwhile to refill. It would be cheaper anyway but if it won't last at least 3//4 of the time of a new one you would be changing tanks way too often. I just fill mine all up in the summer to last all winter for heaters also.

Warm up the big tank (I use a 20lb bbq grill tank). I put it in my warm garage the day before I refill. Cool the small (1lb tanks). I put them in my deep freeze half an hour before I fill them. Make sure the valve is closed on the large tank. Attach the refill valve to the large tank. Next screw a 1lb tank on straight (so you don't strip the threads). Flip the big tank with the small tank attached upside down and open the valve on the big tank. Time it for one minute. Then close the valve and flip it upright. Unscrew the now filled 1 lb tank. I test for leaks with soap water. If there is a "leaker" put it on one of your camping items (that has a valve you can close until you need it) and use it first. Then throw it away when empty. Personally, I haven't had a leaker yet
