Per Coghlans:

All of their matches are “safety matches” which means they will not light if accidentally struck against any rough surface; they will only ignite when struck against the striker strip on the box. So, it is not the striker that is “special” it is the chemical make-up of the match-head which only allows ignition when struck against the striker provided.
