I was a traditionalist and did not like the esthetics of the split grip. The new Xtreme Elites finally came out with the Recoil brand guides I prefer so I purchased some Xtreme Elites. Within the first week I forgot they even had a split grip, Except for the cast, the split grip feel exactly like a full grip. Your left had is mostly palming the reel anyway. On your decision between the Elite or Xtreme. In my opinion, I have fished both. The Xtreme is more sensitive. Probably due to the Recoil guides and reduced rod weights.

i have both, the legen extreme is my fav. i'm a fan of the split grips.. sensitivity is the same.. you just need to decide whether or not you like recoil guides and split grips.. recoils are a little noisy when fishing braid..

Which model is best for spinnerbaits?

Details:

I am debating between the 7' mh fast action (12-20 lb. line, 3/8-1 ounce lures) or the 6'8" m extra fast action (8-14 lb. line, 1/4-5/8 ounce lures).

These two rods have two totally different applications and feels. I use the 7' MH for tossing jigs and heavy plastics. It is very sensitive yet has plenty of backbone to really put the pressure on a fish. It is as great med to heavy plastic, jig rod and also works great with medium to heavy spinner baits. The 6'8" MXF is truly a finesse gem. It is one of the lightest bait casting rods available. I use it for dropshotting, light plastics, light shakey head, top water, and light spinnerbait applications. It is so sensitive I like to use it in night tourneys when a very light pressure bite can be missed with a less sensitive rod.

I currently am using several Shimano reels with these rods. I just bought a new Curado 200E7 last year and have been using it with a XC70MF and model similar to the EC70MF. I have been very successful using it in shakey head applicatins. The new Curados are smaller and are very comfortable to palm all day. I have used braided line with them also. They excel with the braids no stretch properties and you can feel every pebble and stick along the bottom.

What makes this rod so expensive?

I have a fenwick HMG and I now understand how much nicer a high end rod is. And I can also safely say that I will never spend under a hundred dollars on a rod again. But is this rod really worth three hundred dollars? What makes it better than a hundred dollar rod (is it more sensitive, more durable, ect.)?

I have fished St Croix rods from the entry level Premier(they now have the Triumph series) up through the newest Xtreme Elites. As you progress up the price range you will notice a definite difference in the sensitivity. The difference between the Legend Tourney and Elite is night and day. I believe you should spend your money on a great rod and team it up with the Curado reel you are also looking at. You have to feel the bite to make use of your reel.

the major difference between lower end rods and higher end rods is components and scrim.. quality reel seats, guides and cork handles are the norm.. rec recoil guides avg about 100 dollars for a set to build a rod. the best way to describe scrim is this.. when a rod is made the graphite is laid out in a sheet then rolled into a tube.. then its coated in epoxy, and another sheet of graphite is rolled around it.. this is repeated several times to make a blank.. basically scrim is the layer between the sheets of graphite.. on a higher end rod the scrim is carbon based so you have more or less a solid graphite rod which increases sensitivity.. it is rumored that bowing ( the aeronautical company) helped loomis design the compound for the glx rods.. which i'm sure was costly.. with the graphite scrim your rods will be lighter weight and more sensitive. your lower end rods have fiberglass or something similar for scrim which is why they tend to be heavier and less sensitive.. when you are fishing lures that require sensitivity its priceless.. throwing a topwater.... not so much hope this helps ....
