Browning Citori

Details:
Can someone please tell me what the difference is between the 3 citori reels with the 6:4 gear ration? I know one is the wide spool, one is low profile? What are the differences?

A:
The BPS website is showing 4 models in 6.4:1, but the catalog shows 3....One of them is a "flipping" model, meaning it has a switch with on/off that lets you push the cast button to flip or pitch the lure and when released it ingages the spool, instead of turning the handle to ingage the spool. Another model is a left hand retrieve. The other model has a higher line capacity(wide spool)175yds./14lbs. vs. 120yds./12lbs. and the other model is the "base" model with 120yds./12lbs of line, with 6.4:1 ratio

Brake Settings... only 4?

Details:
It looks like this reel only has 4 brake settings, OFF and 1/2/3? Or is it adjustable between those numbers ie 1-10 like most reels? What exactly is a "Radial Tuned Braking centrifugal cast control" system. Maybe It's not what I am thinking it is...

A:
You are correct there is only 4 settings. This is because it has 9 brakes, in the off position no brakes are on, in postition 1, three brakes are on, 2, six brakes are on and 3, nine brakes are on. The brakes contact a movable drum in the outer housing. Its basically an externally adjustable centrifical brake system. Radial tuning just balances the system a little better. Be warned it is a little noisey but this dosen't affect the performance or durability of this reel.

this reel is VERY touchy. It does allow you to cast a mile if you have it dialed in. If not, the reel will give you a birds nest. a Pteradactyl nest really. be careful. the centrifugal is just an additional calibration system. for this reel, i dont feel it helps. In the shimanos, yes, it helps a ton.

I have a ton of experience in this department. So my answer is this: it depends on the reel. If there are many openings that can get to the cavity of the reel, say the bearings and gears, it is good to grease that baby up once in a while. I have a team diawa that I have had since 94. Never cleaned it. Never. still casts like a dream. the gears are still great. Makes some sounds, but works great. I have another abu garcia reel- some grit got into it and it doesnt work as well, and is not as smooth. I took it apart, cleaned it, and it works great. Just feel, and listen to your reel. if it complains, clean it. if it does not, keep on keepin on!

If you have mechanical experience and the
schematics and carefully lay all the parts
out in order, so you can put it back togather.
Then it is pretty easy, other wise let the
pro's handle it.

I have a Quantam code and a Pro Qualifier and this reel is in the middle of them. Meaning the code is a good reel for beginners or casual fishermen, its noisey and if you fish a lot it will only last 8 months to a year. The citori is noisey but it is more durable than the code. The pro qualifier is my favorite of the three. It is not noisey casts a mile and you can't go wrong with the dual braking sysytem that bass pro puts on their reels. Go with the Pro, you won't be sorry.

If you have the 10 sized reel, you can first push the logo button on the palming side cover and then twist it upwards(clockwise). If you have the 20sized reel(wide spool reel), please turn the palming side cover downwards(counter-clockwise) after pushing the logo on it first.

Lure weight?

I know the rod has a lot to do with it but will this reel handle light weight lures and soft plastics like topwater plugs and wacky worms? Can you recommend one that will? Something under $150

I would recommend a bass pro johnny morris signature series reel, but the reel is not as much of an issue as line weight. What size line are you planning on using? If you are going to use line that is 10lb or over, what I would use is the johnny morris signature. If you are going to use something under 10lb line i would use a spinning reel like a Shimano saros or stratic.

from my opinion, yes, it can cast small lures, but I would recommend not to. it can backlash like crazy unless you got it dialed in. get the lower end revo- I cannot believe how amazing that reel is and how low maintenence it is. Also, I can cast smaller lures with ease.

This reel will handle any lure/presentaion and line type out there. As you said the rod has more to do with this issue than the reel does: however, pick an appropriate gear ratio for the technique that you intend to use the reel for.

This reel doesn't have magnetic braking..My pro qualifier has both magnetic and a 6-pin centrifugal cast control . It cast light lures very easily..Find a reel that has both cast controls and you'll be in business
