The shaft has grease on the inside so water can't get in....it's low temp grease. I've chipped these out of icy holes and never had a problem with the shaft not spinning.

There is a petroleum based lubricant that is inside of the tube that encases the shaft of the tip-ups spool/trip mechanism drive shaft. This lubricant is sealed internally within this tube thus preventing it from freezing around the drive shaft for the trip mechanism where it rises up thru the skim ice in the hole while waiting for your minnow to get T-boned.Details:

There is a hook that the line goes through once you set the depth which makes it so that if line is to come out, it spins the spool. The spool is connected to a shaft that runs inside the outer shaft and is sealed up with grease so no water gets in. When the spool spins, the 'T' at the top spins and lets the flag up. You can see the T spinning from a ways away if the fish is running. If you're using large bait it's tough to set drag on this model, you can kind of wedge the line into the loop to keep bait from running and moving the spool, or you can use a clothespin or an elastic. They come put together, just add your backing and leader/hook, unfold, bait the hook and fish.A:
Jake,generally the fact that the spool is operating underwater creates a moderate amount of drag along with a certain amount of drag simply from the mechanism. I've fished over 20 years with tip ups and never had a free spooled mess equivalent to what happens with a casting reel in the hands of a novice. The designers have factored in the proper resistance in the tip ups mechanical design to prevent this from happening. Use 30lb-40lb heavy braided dacron tip up line, with a 2'- 30lb super braid leader, I use a split shot 8" up from a small treble, but everyone has their individual preferences on the hook set up. The yellow tip ups are an excellent product, we've used them many years.
