for me, i place the hook of the scale through the gill plate BEING VERY CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE ACTUAL GILLS. this scale is very quick and shouldnt take no more than a second to display the weight. that is the safest way, rather than putting the hook through the fish's mouth.. no need for that

well... If its a bass, you can hook it through the soft tissue by the lip, but you risk injuring and stressing the fish more. Or you can use in conjunction with a weigh bag, net, or a lip gripper.

The packaging or website explains how to change the scale from kg to Lbs. I believe you have to push and hold the power button down until the units in use flashes, then tap the power button again to switch between kg and Lbs and back again etc. You should only have to do this one time. Good Luck!

When the scale first turns on, the digits flash for a few seconds. If you press the power button again while the digits are flashing, it should change from kg to lbs.

You can go from kgs to lbs, and to lbs - ozs (3 different screens). Hold the "on" button down right on the corner. As soon as the screen starts flashing the info, release the button and start pressing and releasing the button. It will go from kgs, to lbs, to lbs / ozs with each press of the button, and will continue to cycle through the choices until you stop pressing the on button. If you go to Rapala's website you are wasting time. I bought mine as part of a Rapala package, and no instructions came with it. I just fooled with it until I figured it out (we were in the same boat) I hope that this helps. kgs is the setting only if you don't choose another one.

Press the "ON" button (located on top right hand corner of scale) to turn on scale, while the numbers are blinking press the "ON" button again to select lbs or kg. Once selected, wait for numbers to flash. Now the scale is ready to use. (these directions are on the box)

"When using this scale for catch and release (preferably), it is best to use a wet towel or non abraisive container with plenty of room for the fish, the scale does have tare weight for this purpose. This will avoid contact with gills that can likely injure the fish."
