no metal shelf
I believe you would have no trouble with the elk quarters because lots of places for straps to attach

You could adapt the carry straps to fit a bow. It also comes with 8 straps to use with the frame when hauling out an animal. thye could be used to configure something

It has multiple straps on the outside that would probably hold a bow very secure.

There are straps but whatever you mount would be hitting the back of your knees as you walk. There are straps up the center of the pack that I used for mounting my sleeping pad. The pack is large enough to allow the sleeping bag to go inside and the pad and tent to be mounted vertically on the pack

yes, there are some loops that you could use. It's not a super big pack, but if you are carefull, you could make an overnight trip with it.

A:
No. I packed it into the mountains in a rainstorm. I purchased an aftermarket rain cover and any areas not covered were soaked through when I finally made camp. Make sure you use some means of waterproofing whatever you put in the pack. I used trash bags and they worked great. Kept everything separate and dry

The term 100% makes this answer a definite no however, I have yet to own any pack that cannot be blown away in a tornado or hurricane. That said, the pack has a cinch cord at the top of the large compartment, duffle bag, and then a well secured cap. Blowing rain finds its way into everything and dry stuff sacks are a good alternative to finding a waterproof pack. There is a "waterproof" pocket on the pack to hold money or the such, about the size of a wallet. If you plan to travel in inclement weather, then a waterproof pack cover may work for you but, they do get pulled off by tree branches and blow away when you are not looking. Use stuff sacks for the critical cargo and let the pack breath so the wet tent or ground cloth can dry during the days hike.

I certainly don't expect to be hauling a metric ton with this, but I would be interested if anyone has any information about the construction stability of this frame. I've never seen a composite frame before, and there isn't a much info "in the wild" that I can find on the topic. It looks like the pack is a few pounds lighter with the composite, but that isn't of much use if packing out a rabbit will crack the struts. (Hey, we have big rabbits in Michigan!)

Thanks,
John

at first glance the frame appears skinny and weak but it is flexible and quite strong , as long as its not abused it should hold up fine, my only concern is cold weather but i have yet to test that out

I used the pack to "workout" prior to an elk hunt and then packed into the mountains with this unit. My practice pack was 50 lbs of books.I changed the distribution of the weight to determine how to pack the bag for the hunt. It didn't matter where I placed the weight. It worked well. My hunt pack was about the same but add a rifle. No problems with the pack on it. I was not fortunate enough to use it for packing out any game but is it seems like its 80 lbs rating is real and will hold up accordingly

I put my fifty five pound three year old in the pack just for the same reason you would ask that question. Frame is a+ plastic that seemed not to bend or put much strain on it.

A:
The composite frame is lighter and is flexible when twisted though is plenty rigid enough to use as a backrest in camp. If you use airline travel, the composite frame is much less likely to be damaged by baggage handlers. The frame can be extensively adjusted for the perfect fit from small to extra tall. The frame is rated at 80 lbs. if you really plan on carrying more, an aluminum frame is probably best but will cost much more than this well made composite frame.
