Yes, you can use it as close as one foot away. I will routinely sit beside my 18-month-old and play 'radio' while sitting on the couch. It does not feed back and is crystal clear. I would think that it will work on your bikes just fine.A:

yes the 1000s have basic ring tones only you have to get the 1050 for the animal sounds..

This particular model does not offer animal sound call alerts, but Midland’s GXT1050 model does have cougar, duck, crow, wolf and turkey call alerts. The Midland GXT1050 Two-Way Radio is sold separately and can be can be found through item search at item number 532-427-001 of 1
