I am a long range guy with a fairly tall tackle box. How much space is between the lower shelf and the middle shelf? Also, can the rod holders accomodate larger diameter rods (deep sea 50# class gear) without the reels attached?

It will definitely hold your large diameter rods. You can adjust the shelves to whatever height you want. I keep my Plano 797 on top and a carry bag on the middle shelf with room for my terminal tackle box and a shoe box full of lures Bottom shelf has more storage boxes for my various fishing lines and reels.

JoeOC, you can adjust the shelf height to accomadate any box. I am not sure about the base rod holders...plenty big enough for my freshwater rods.

There are 3 shelves, I have 18 inches between the middle shelf and the bottom but this can be customized and the top shelf is obviously open and seems pretty sturdy.

Don't think 50# is going to fit well though

Yes we use your for stand up gear with Penn tuna sticks and 30T's and 30TW's
See no problem with 50's except you can't put them side by side. we mix in surf gear and smaller boat rods. they are about 2 3/4 total height

No tools are required at all. There are no screws. The large pieces just snap together and the four corner uprights screw together.

No tools required but check contents first before departing store and see if they assemble correctly. If you buy on-line....good luck.
