how much thrust, how long for shaft, and bow or transom mount
Thanks

A:
The recommended minimum thrust for a 14’ boat is 35 pounds. You will want to measure your boat when it is fully loaded with gear and people for a regular day of fishing. Measure from intended mounting location (transom or bow) to the waterline of the loaded boat. Then add 18 inches. That's the shaft length you are looking for.

Bow Mount:
• Pulls boat through the water
• Offers most maneuverability and control
• More popular for medium to large fishing boats
• Requires flat deck/area to mount
• Hands-free option

Transom Mount:
• Pushes boat through the water
• Less expensive than bow mount TM
• Popular for smaller boats, including canoes, personal pontoons, duck boats, etc.
• Easy to mount—clamps to stern

Staff Answer
A:
With a 12-14 foot boat length, you will want to have at least 35 pounds of thrust and see chart below for shaft length.

Shaft: Measure from the mounting surface to the waterline. For rough water conditions, add 5” to the waterline measurement. For hand-control trolling motors, add 12” to Recommended Shaft Length.

HP vs thrust?

I have an 18 1/2' Fisher with a 120 HP motor...would the 80 lb thrust be sufficient to troll? What HP equivalent would that be?

A:
One horsepower is approximately equal to 15 pounds of thrust, so if you take the amount of thrust divided by 15, you should be able to determine the approximate horsepower.

18 foot Jon boat

Details:
I am getting an 18 foot Jon boat and the trolling motor will be the only power source. Boat weight is 475 lbs, max weight capacity is 1,375 lbs, beam is 75 inches. Would a 55 lb 12 volt Traxxix transom mount be enough? Also what size battery would be needed?

A:
I use the 55lb 12 volt Traxxix on a Tracker ProGuide V16 (approximatley 2200 lbs with the 60 horse Merc) It pushes this boat just fine for trolling and slow movements. If it's your only motor, and you need to cover a lot of real estate, you might want to step up to a higher thrust, but you would also need a 24volt system.

Get the 55. You will be able to use it on any boat, like on a rented state park boat or if you want something bigger in the future.

My partner and I fish local rivers that have depths of 12 feet. On the other hand we have some places we have to get out of the boat and drag our aluminum boat through ankle deep water. The prop height, from tip to tip, might not be as beneficial for our use if it's to big.

I use the 55lb Traxxis varible on my 13ft Sports Pal canoe when I fish the Allegheny River in PA. This is a river I fish very often. I am not sure how to exactly answer your question but, the one handed stow feature is why I bought this motor. The Allegheny is also a very shallow river and it sound like I fish it the same way as you guys. I have also had two very bad major back surgeries. When I start to enter shallow water, I simply reach back with one hand and put the motor into stow postion so I can paddle or so atleast put the motor in a high postion so it doesn.t drag. The composite shaft can really take the punishment of those unseen boulders. I really love this motor. Matter of a fact, I bought two of them. It is much easier on my back than my old Endura. Hope this helps

From center shaft to blade tip is 5 3/4 inches. That's about 3" below the body of the motor housing. There is a metal guide fin made into the body which extends down almost the same as the blade too that will help push objects out from the blades path. I have run my motor in 1 ft. of water and it did good as long as the speed is very slow. Hope this helps.

My biggest problem with some previous 5- speed models I've owned is that the slowest speed is too fast for slow-fishing the shoreline. Is '1' speed any slower on the TRAXXIS than on other models?

From one Ohio boy to another. I know that this is not exactly answering your question but, I wanted to chime in. I used to have a 5 speed Endura. Well, I had a few major back surgeries and the one handed stow feature on the Traxxis really caught my eye. I decided to purchase a 5 speed Traxxis. Of course, when I got to the store, they were out of everything except for the 55lb. varible model. It was a little more money but I bought it anyway. Now I have infinite speed adjustment and the battery Maximizer is an awesome feature that really works. I hope this arms you with more info while making a decision on the Traxxis.

A:
In general, you want to have as much thrust as possible for the times you run into wind and current. The rule of thumb in choosing thrust is to take the total weight of the loaded boat and divide it by 70. For example, if your boat with people and gear weighs a total of 3500 lbs you will then divide that by 70. That means ideally you should have a motor with at least 50 lbs of thrust.
