It does have a Backlight for when it starts to get dark out. The screen is clearly visible in bright sunlight.

Can you have a permanant transducer on a boat and hook this up to it but after you remove the suction cup transducer.

Yes, it can be used in saltwater. Just wipe down the screen if saltwater gets on the screen.

Details: 
Can this unit be used on my pontoon boat. At present I have a transducer connected to one of my rear end pontoons. Where would a suction cup adhere to on my boat.

It needs a flat surface, on the back of the boat to mount. I'm not sure what your particular pontoons look like at the back of your boat but, i know i have seen them on other pontoon boats.

I place the cup on the side of my kayak. you can adjust angle by over 90 deg.

Yes, the water temperature is measured. The battery is 12VDC.

I have mine hooked up to 12VDC, from my boat battery. It does read temperature.
